ARTE Film Week @ Zawya

Tonight marks the start of ARTE film week at Downtown arthouse cinema Zawya. The uber-Euro movie stint will feature a selection of flicks produced by the leading Franco-German broadcaster.

The selection kicks off with Suzanne, the tale of one girl and the love she pursues to the point of leaving everything behind. The fesitival will also feature Mexican film Heli by Amat Escalante, winner of the Best Director award at the Cannes IFF 2013, Portuguese film Tabu by Miguel Gomes, winner of the Alfred Bauer award at the Berlinale 2012 and The Missing Picture by Rithy Panh, Cambodian entry for the Academy Awards 2014.

Zawya executive and actress Sarrah Abdelrahman believes that the festival is set to be one of the highlights of the cinema's calander. She told CairoScene: "We have always been partners with ARTE in Cairo Panorama, we are now taking it a step further by hosting this event at Zawya. All of the films featured are exceptional in their own way, they have all been selected in the most prestigious international film festivals. We hope to make this an annual event in partnership with ARTE."

Meanwhile, Abdelrahman claims that the future looks even brighter for the capital's home of mopey French cinema later this summer. She added that "it has only been three months since our opening and we are very happy with the results. We are closing for the month of Ramadan, and we have lots of exceptional events coming up after our break."

All movies during the ARTE film week will be screened at 6.30pm and 9.30pm
