Zawya Cinema Program Honours Egyptian Filmmaker Aly Badrakhan

Downtown Cairo’s Zawya Cinema is celebrating the legacy of renowned Egyptian filmmaker Aly Badrakhan with their latest retrospective program, running from December 2nd to December 26th.

Titled ‘Aly Badrakhan Retrospective’, the program will spotlight the prolific career of Badrakhan and his profound influence on the Golden Age of Egyptian Cinema, featuring a selection of five of Badrakhan’s classic films. Starring his former wife - muse and the Cinderella of Egyptian cinema, Soad Hosny - the program includes special screenings of ‘Al-Karnak’, ‘Al-Gou’’, ‘Ahl El-Qema’, ‘Shafiqa W Metwali’ and ‘El-Hob Alazi Kan’.

Born in Cairo in 1947, Aly Badrakhan’s cinematic career commenced after graduating from the Higher Institute of Cinema, followed by an internship at Italy’s Cinecita. Badrakhan released his inaugural feature film, ‘El-Hob Alazi Kan’, in 1973, followed by ‘El Karnak’, on which he collaborated with renowned literary figure and Noble Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz. His last cinematic showing was ‘El Raghba’ in 2002, which starred an ensemble of renowned actors such as Elham Shahein, Nadia Al Gendy, Yaser Galal and Salah Abdallah.

At the end of the program’s first screening ‘Ahl El-Qema’, Zawya will host the Egyptian filmmaker himself, Aly Badrakhan, in a post-show panel discussion, moderated by filmmaker and writer Bassam Mortada. Tickets for ‘Aly Badrakhan Retrospective’ are available at the door and online via Zawya’s official website.
