Cairo American College Students Make a Fortune Selling Beach Towels that Can be Converted into Bags

You wish you zipped and flipped it first, right?

Staff Writer

With just one month on the market (well not on the market market, but you know what we mean) Zip & Flip beach bags have brought in over 40 thousand EGP to its founders… who are high school students. It’s okay, let all your feelings of failure out now. You need to allow yourself to embrace your feelings in order to overcome them. We’ll leave you a moment.

The entrepreneurial project, founded by students at the Cairo American College, aims to make use of local Egyptian materials and handicrafts to create colorful and functional beach bags, which have been available since April and have so far yielded the impressive amount of money at 250 EGP a pop, with almost 200 orders.

What’s special about the bag is that you can unzip it and have act as your towel, and when you’re done you can zip it back up and have it be your bag. So on one hand you have a bag with waterproof lining protecting your belongings and on the other, you have a towel that you can lie upon and rethink the choices you’ve made in your life. A great combination, says Zip & Flip’s video on YouTube and Facebook. Now why didn't we think of that? Sounds simple enough but pretty smart.

Zip & Flip’s co-CEO Hashem Abdou mentioned that he’s, “... really proud of the work we’ve done so far! It’s been a great journey for the team. Hoping for more success in the future,” and we hope so too. The Zip & Flip combination was made possible with the help of Injaz Egypt, an organisation specialising in “experiential learning in financial literacy, work readiness, and entrepreneurship… for young people,” according to Injaz’s site.

More power to the Zip & Flip team. We recommend you take your stuff out of the bag first before you unfold it, though.
