ISIS Claims Responsibility for Coptic Cathedral Bombing in Cairo
Confusion continues to loom over who was responsible for Sunday's horrific bombing of St. Peter and St. Paul Coptic Orthodox Church at the St. Mark's Coptic Cathedral in Cairo, as ISIS releases a statement alleging their involvement, which conflicts with statements made by Egyptian authorities.
On Tuesday, ISIS issued a statement claiming that they were responsible for the horrific bombing of the church at the St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in Cairo.
The statement released by ISIS contradicts statements that have been made by Egyptian officials about the ongoing investigation. The statement released on the SITE intelligence group is claiming to have killed and wounded 80 “crusaders” detonating a suicide belt allegedly worn by Abu Abdallah El-Masri. However, at the funeral, President Sisi announced that the mass murderer responsible was 22-year-old Mahmoud Shafik Mohamed Mostafa.
The president also added that they had arrested four suspects in connection with the attack, while two other suspects remain at large. Meanwhile, Egypt’s Minister of Interior appeared on state TV on Monday evening claiming that they have made further arrests and identified members of the “terrorist cell” responsible for the bombing, accusing a branch of Muslim Brotherhood group residing in Qatar to be involved.
Conflicting claims continue to emerge, however, we will continue to update the story as the ongoing investigation releases new details.
