On Friday, Russia responded to allegations made by Poland’s defense minister that Egypt sold both of its newly acquired Mistral warships to Russia for $1 as “nonsense”.

Circulating global media outlets on Thursday were reports that Antoni Macierewicz told Poland’s parliament that according to information, by unnamed, but allegedly “good sources”, Egypt sold the Mistral warships it just purchased for 1$ to the Russians.

Originally the Mistral ships acquired by Egypt were built for Russia, but after the annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula, France decided to refund the Russian money and sell the ships to Egypt instead.

According to the AP, Macierewicz comments were made in light of the straining of ties between Warsaw and Paris over the cancellation of a $3.5 billion deal to acquire French-made helicopters.

Refuting the claims that Egypt sold its Mistral Warships is Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov dismissing the allegations as “silliness” and “self-promotion”. However, at this time no statement has been made by Egyptian officials acknowledging this seemingly ridiculous allegation.
