The Cairo Tattoo Convention (CTC) is back this year for it’s second edition, this time hosting a dynamic selection of international artists including Fercha Pombo from Berlin, Germany with her black-ink “mutating technique” Pietrie Butler and Pyry Ruuskanen from Pietrie’s Art studio in Helsinki, Finland, bringing you a collection of custom tattoo styles specialising in old school and Neo-traditional tattoos. Another wicked artist coming along is Mishla Nacho Lassalle from Malaga, Spain, specialising in dotwork tattoos, and Meerak Meinohg also from Berlin, Germany, specialising in graphic realism and surrealism, plus many more exciting global, regional and local artists, including Cairo’s multi-skilled artist Timur Reda of True Skin Art tattoo studio creating horror, geometry and script tattoos and among other styles.

The CTC is first of its kind in Egypt, curated by Orne Gil founder of Nowhereland Tattoo Studio in Cairo, who will also be tattooing at the convention. Eager to educate on the history and art of tattoo culture and break the social and cultural restrictions around tattoos being considered a taboo in the Middle East, Orne has teamed up with photojournalist Ines Della Vale to report on the tattoo culture boom that has been taking Cairo by storm over the past four years to magazines such as Total Tattoo, Sink & Ink and Rolling Stone Magazine Italia. We headed to the first Cairo Tattoo Convention which brought Egyptian tattoo artists out of their shells and gather under one roof last year, for the new subculture generation of tattoo enthusiasts to engage with and learn from. Things such as quality, concept and style are slowly becoming a matter of regard and concern to most Egyptians interested in getting tattooed.

The 2015 convention, lead by Orne Gil, and now gaining momentum and international attention, will host 27 tattoo artists and three piercers from around the world and will be taking place on November 6th and 7th from 11am to 11pm. Tickets will be sold on door and will cost LE100 per day or LE170 for both days. There are no pre-sale tickets available.

To book a tattoo artist appointment at the convention log onto the Cairo Tattoo Convention website here and choose an artist of your choice whose previous works and contact details are provided under their individual profiles. Appointments depend on the artist’s availability and are not managed by the CTC.

If you’re a tattoo artist or piercer and are interested in booking a booth, the price for a tattoo artist booth is 120€ per day and the price for a piercer booth is 80€ per day. Performances taking place over the two days of the event will be announced in September and bands, musicians and DJs interested to perform are welcome to apply by getting in touch on the CTC website’s Contact Form.
