Egypt Among Worst Places to be Born

Egypt has fared pretty poorly in The Economist's ranking of places to live…

Staff Writer

People love to debate what the best place in the world to live is, and general opinion tends to favour Europe. For example, in The Economist’s “Where-to-be-born index 2013,” 5 of the top 10 countries were European, and 4 of them were Scandinavian. So it’s natural that people from all over the world would be rushing to check it and find out where their homeland ranks up. Needless to say, Egyptians will be disappointed, yet unsurprised, to find that Egypt has ranked in at number 60 of the 80 countries ranked.

Beating out places such as Vietnam and Syria, and coming behind exotic paradises like Iran and Latvia, this will come as little surprise to anyone who has been paying the slightest bit of attention to Egypt. Corruption, widespread sexual harassment, rampant poverty, an economy in shambles, and two revolutions in three years have left the country as a less-than-desirable place to make a life. But let’s be honest, we did better than we expected.
