Mubarak Faces Final Retrial for the 2011 Killing of Protesters

Former President Hosni Mubarak will once again face charges over the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising, after a high Egyptian appeals court ordered a retrial.

The trial will be held at the Court of Cassation, the highest criminal court and legal authority in the country, and will be the third time Mubarak will face trial on these charges. Whatever this court rules will be final, as Egyptian law stipulate that the verdict cannot be appealed. The retrial is scheduled for November 5th 2015, as reported by Ahram Online.

Initially Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for playing a role in the death of 239 demonstrators during the 18 day revolt that started in January and ended his rule in February 2011. However, the appeals court overturned the decision and ordered a retrial. To the shock of many, in November 2014 the court dropped the case against the ex-president claiming legal flaws and clearing Mubarak and his interior minister at the time, Habib Al-Adly, as well as six security aides.
