After a scandalous high school exam season in 2016, which witnessed mass cheating and leaking of test questions on social media, Egypt's Education Ministry announced that jamming equipment might be used on cell phones inside exam rooms in an attempt to curb academic dishonesty. The announcement was made by the head of Thanaweya Amma examinations, Reda Hegazi, El Ahram reports.

When approved, Egypt's armed forces will provide the necessary jamming equipment, while also taking on the responsibility of printing test papers in its own facilities in order to prevent leaks.

After the leaking of 2016 Thanaweya Amma exams, the Ministry of Education obliged students to retake some of the exams, sparking outrage and mass protests around the country.
