Egyptian MP Threatens to Repeal Price Hikes on Mobile Recharge Cards

Secretary of the Communications Committee of the House of Representatives, Ahmed Zidan revealed that the Communications Committee was not notified of the recent devaluation of mobile recharge cards. Zidan stressed his rejection of this ill-timed decision especially that it has not been discussed in the committee, according to Al-Shorouk.

“The government is free to make decisions without prior approval of the House of Representatives, but the Parliament is also free to agree, adjust, or annul said decisions,” stated Zidan.

Zidan also said “It’s better for the government to discuss decisions of major public influence with the parliament prior to their release in order to avoid confusion and public disturbance. This is an unacceptable decision; I am not convinced.”

An Alexandrian lawyer, Tarek Mahmoud, also responded to the devaluation by filing a lawsuit on Saturday before the administrative court against the Egyptian Prime Minister, the Minister of Telecommunications and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in order to annul the decision, according to Ahram Online.
