A draft law that would result in an increase on service fees paid to the government for a number of services, including issuing or renewing passports, foreigners' residence papers in Egypt, vehicle licenses, and cell phone services was approved by Parliament on Monday, according to Egypt Independent.

According to the draft law, the fees for issuing or renewing passports will increase to EGP 200 from EGP 54, applying for Egyptian citizenship will now cost EGP 1,000 as opposed to EGP 50 previously, and the fine for late application for residence will increase from EGP 20 to EGP 300. Additionally, there will be a fine of EGP 400 on foreigners for late notifications on their residence status, non-notification of change of residence, and failure to obtain or renew a residence permit. The report adds that foreigners seeking to obtain Egyptian citizenship would be required to pay a fee of EGP 10,000, or no more than $500.

The decision comes on the heels of a bill approved earlier this year by the National Defence and Security Committee that would grant the Egyptian nationality to anyone who deposits $500,000 in an Egyptian bank.
