The 24th of October was the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter in 1945, dubbed UN Day. This year however also marked the United Nation’s 70th anniversary. More than 300 iconic landmarks, monuments, buildings, museums and bridges around the world were lit up in blue, the UN’s official color, as part of a global campaign commemorating the special event. The global celebration kicked off at the UN Headquarters in New York on the 23rd of October, followed by New Zealand’s Auckland Museum and Australia’s Sydney Opera House, then spread over nearly 60 countries and their respective landmarks, from The Great Wall of China to Alhambra in Spain and all the way to the Pyramids of Giza here in Egypt. “By turning the world UN blue for a day, we can light a way to a better tomorrow,” expressed UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to The General Assembly.
