Transportation is a problem that drives everyone in Egypt nuts. Earlier this year, Swvl swept into the scene and helped transform Egyptian mass transit with an innovative smartphone app. Now, the company’s transportation services are launching in Egypt’s second largest city, Alexandria.

Swvl is the idea of former Careem executive Mostafa Kandil, who led the ride hailing app’s marketing campaigns for expansion to a number of Egyptian cities. The way it works is a bus or van drives through set routes that commuters can then join.

“Our strategy is to help revitalise public transportation system in Egypt and other emerging markets by providing an affordable, reliable and convenient means of commuting to everyone while creating job opportunities for the locals,” said co-founder of Swvl, Mostafa Kandil. “We are proud to announce the launch of our services in Alexandria.”

The app is inspired by the same ideals behind Careem, to transform the transport scene in Egypt and the region. Careem is now a big investor in Swvl, with large funds coming that will help the app launch beyond Egypt into other emerging markets in the MENA region.

Compared to other on-demand transport apps, Swvl users can save up to 80 percent on their ride, and the app itself will track the high-quality vehicle and give an exact arrival time for extra convenience. Alexandria’s four million residents and thousands of regular visitors are about to have a welcome alternative for getting around.
