Only Around 500 of Egypt's Women Hold Firearm Licenses

Recent statistics show that more than 500 Egyptian women hold firearm licenses, including Jihan El Sadat and Suzanne Mubarak.

Recent statistics by the Public Security Sector have found that more than 500 Egyptian women hold a license to carry a firearm for self defense, most of whom are former MPs and prominent businesswomen. This number is in stark contrast to the 160,328 men who obtained arms licenses nationwide.

The Ministry of Interior applies the same conditions for both men and women to obtain a firearm license; applicants must be at least 21 years of age, not suffering from psychiatric or neurological illnesses, and have a clean criminal record. Individual citizens wishing to obtain a license can submit their request at a police station, while private security companies must submit to the Ministry of Interior’s Public Security Sector.

According to Egypt Independent, among the 500 women who currently hold firearm licenses are former first ladies Jihan El Sadat and Suzanne Mubarak.
