Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church, and sovereign of the Vatican City, is currently planning a visit to Cairo in May. The announcement was made in a Saturday statement by the Vatican's spokesperson, Greg Burke, however no dates or itinerary have been confirmed, Washington Post reports.

Pope Francis received an invitation from President Abdel-Fatah Al-Sisi to visit the country during their meeting in the Vatican City in 2014, Al Ahram reports.

Italian state-run RAI reported that the papal trip will include a visit to the leading Sunni institute, Al Azhar, on May 20-21. Al Azhar's Grand Imam, Ahmed Muhammad Al-Tayyeb, met with Pope Francis last May during his visit to the Vatican City in which both religious figures established plans to hold an international conference for peace and coexistence, date and location have yet to be announced.

The trip will constitute the second trip by Francis to the Middle East after his trip to Israel and Jordan in 2014.
