Read For Speed: a Novel Idea

A Boston-based software developer called Spritz has been working on an application that they hope will change the concept of reading forever. We assume they have an aim of roping in a new generation of kids who would rather watch the film, play the game or go to Cliff Notes with a programme that will allow readers to finish a whole novel in under 90 minutes. After testing their product with a number of e-books they're about to launch, they're going public with Samsung’s new line of wearable technology.

The programme speeds up the process of reading with an ingenious, rapid serial visual presentation of the impending words. It also manipulates the format of the words to more appropriately line them up with the "eye’s natural motion of reading."

Our brain usually deciphers a cocktail of letters slightly off center of each word, and this is the Optimal Recognition Point (ORP). So what Spritz does is highlight the OPR of each word, making the letter red, keeping the OPR in the same place on the screen as the words change.With that technology our eyes don't shift left to right as we read but are focused centrally and process information instantaneously rather than spend time decoding each word.

As you get used to it you can also speed up the words per minute to absorb books even faster. As great as the innovation is, catching up with the scattershot mind of today's society, we do feel that it is somewhat de-valuing literature and nothing will ever quite feel the same as finishing a worn novel after slaving away at the words for weeks.
