When Music Inspires Art: Sane's Insane New Course

The Illuminating Colors of Sound course at Sane Art Centre sounded so intriguing we couldn't help but find out how course leader and architect Mahmoud Riad uses music to motivate new methods of art.

Ahead of his unorthodox art course titled The Illuminating Colors Of Sound at the newly-opened Sane art centre, we were so intrigued by the title, that we had to reach out to Mahmoud Riad, the Director and Principal Architect at RiadArchitecture and course instructor, to find out exactly what the mysteriously named sessions. "It's an expressive art course that uses music as a way to tap into the expressive capabilities of a person, meaning the way each one of us individually hears and interprets music can be translated into a unique art form," he tell us, igniting our interest even further. "I always felt that music and architecture go together hand in hand, music illicit types of feelings that are unique and different from one person to the next."

Riad graduated with a masters degree in architecture and diploma in urban design from the School of Architecture, Planning, & Preservation at the University of Maryland in 2009. His Masters thesis dissertation explored the relationship between music & architecture and is now sold through Amazon under the title Al Masmaa’: The Place for Listening. The architectural manifestation of his thesis research has won numerous awards including the School of Architecture, Planning, & Preservation’s Dean’s Thesis Prize and the 2009 AIA Maryland Graduate Design Award.

"The exercises given at the course require no previous history or knowledge for either art or music," says Riad, adding that "the course will be on Tuesdays for two hours a time and will be spanning over eight weeks. Anyone over 16 is welcome."
