The Egyptian Who Hijacked a Plane to See his Ex-Wife in Cyprus in 2016 is Back in Egypt

Welcome to the rest of your prison sentence.

Staff Writer

In a spot of extradited news, one-time attempted plane hijacker and next level romantic, Seif Eldin Mustafa, has been handed over to Egyptian authorities in Cairo, pending prosecution. The culprit has been refered to the El-Khalifa police station from Cyprus’s Nicosia District Court, where he will be held until he is interrogated.

The 60-year-old had boarded EgyptAir flight 181 back in March of 2016, armed with a high-explosive belt made entirely of duct tape, wire and a TV remote. He threatened to 'detonate' himself if the flight wasn't detoured to Cyprus, allegedly as a gesture of love to his long-divorced wife.

What most don’t know is that, according to his ex-wife, the seven years she had endured in matrimony with him were 'the darkest days' of her life. According to Marina Paraschos (the wife), Mustafa was a domestic abuser and a drug addict, routinely beating her and their three children. When their fourth child had passed away in a car accident, Mustafa’s response to his wife’s calls was “what do I care?” “The man used my name as an excuse to come to Cyprus and seek asylum,” she’d said in an interview with the Cypriot daily, Politis, back in 2016. “Why did he remember us now?”
