Mohamed Elshorbagy and Raneem El-Welily Win the 2018 Squash US Open

Egyptians are good at many things; driving a centimeter away from other cars without flinching; humor; cinema, but nothing comes close to their domination in the good old game of squash. Yesterday, Egyptians were victorious once again, both in the men’s and women’s category, as World number one Mohamed ElShorbagy and World number two Raneem El-Welily claim the 2018 US Open, according to Ahram.

Though it was a tight battle, ElShorbagy proved too strong for German World number 4 Simon Rosner, beating him 3 games to 2 (8-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8 and 11-4).

"I need to give credit to Rosner, he played amazing throughout the whole week. I’m pleased we had a fair battle, also leased to win my third US Open title. I lost last year and I was a bit disappointed, but I lost to the better player and had no regrets.” said ElShorbagy after the final.  

The women’s final saw less of a fight, with Raneem El-Welily easily beating world number one Nour El-Sherbini in 3 games (11-6, 11-9 and 11-8), in a match that only lasted 33 minutes.

"Nour has had a great week and has played really well and I look forward to many more matches this season," El-Welily said.

"I’m sure she will come back fighting and they will be good battles. Hopefully I can get back to world No 1. It’s my dream and I will continue to fight for it."

El Shorbagy is now quite familiar, and definitely comfortable at the US Open, winning his third title there in the last five years.

By winning this tournament, the two Egyptians each take home a prize money of $22,800, and are the first to qualify for season-ending PSA World Tour Finals, the most important tournament of the year.
