Upon seeing or hearing the word ‘vegan’, many Egyptians become alarmed and set into panic mode because apparently any meal that does not contain meat or animal products cannot possibly satisfy a hungry belly. Trying to change this notion and to revolutionise the way we see and consume food is Yasmine Nazmy’s newest plant based recipe book, Happy Belly.Having established Egypt’s very first vegan restaurant two years ago (now closed), Nazmy moved on to create her own Earthly Delights business where she makes and sells organic plant-based foods. Now, Nazmy has created Egypt’s first ever vegan cookbook with aim of encouraging people to lead healthier and greener lifestyles. No, not everything is made from tofu. In fact, while Nazmy does not use sugar, white flour or any refined products in the recipes she presents, she also doesn't use any tofu! She uses vegetables, lentils, and nuts to make burgers, brownies, pizzas, quiche and more delicious recipes that are beneficial to human health. The book contains more than 100 recipes. So now you have no excuse to call that delivery hotline you have on speed dial.“What really pushed me to write the book was the diet workshop I led for children Down Syndrome. I didn’t want people to have to attend dozens of workshops when I could write a cookbook they could keep with them,” Nazmy tells us. She believes that people should be able know how to cook and lead healthy lifestyles especially with the current economic crisis that has increased the prices of basic goods. “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime,” she laughs. You'll definitely learn how to make more than just a sandwich - if you can even do that.
From an ethical perspective, Nazmy is a strong believer in knowing where our food comes from. “I think we should just do the best we can in avoiding processed and chemically treated foods,” she says. Her recipe book aims to simplify the outburst of contemporary restaurants that create fancy and impressive foods. “Not all of our meals need to be overcomplicated. It’s okay to treat yourself if that’s what you want, but we don’t have to get carried away with fancy restaurants. As long as the food you eat is satisfying, filling and nutritious,” Nazmy points out.From Friday the 3rd of February to Tuesday the 7th of February, the public will have the opportunity to attend her book signing that officially celebrates the release of the recipe book.
